Challenge

Archier undertook the challenge of extending the double fronted, weatherboard Victorian home, factoring in the family’s experiences living in Japan and their penchant for spatial efficiency. “We took time to understand how they currently lived as a family, while also considering their future,” Gilbert says.

The site presented a further challenge as the clients wanted to preserve and enjoy their much-loved backyard garden – from inside as well as out.

Technically advanced glazing was required to deliver abundant light and botanic appreciation as well as desired efficiencies in space and energy.

Solution

Gilbert proposed a discreet two-storey addition, clad in charred timber. This preserved the much loved backyard garden while facilitating a seamless extension. The solution rendered a spatially efficient home catering to the family’s requirements, including three family bedrooms, a services core, a light filled living area, a social kitchen/dining space, and a tranquil primary bedroom nestled amidst the canopy of two large fig trees.

A key to the project’s success was its focus on enhancing natural light flow into the home. The living area, though modest in size compared to other shared spaces, was suffused with natural light through the use of floor-to-ceiling windows. “This created a sense of space and wellbeing,” Gilbert says.

Double height voids connected the two floors while maintaining the primary bedroom as a sanctuary. These voids were innovatively used to suspend netting hammocks, serving as play spaces while connecting the family across levels.

To enhance and enable the renovation’s design and functionality, Gilbert specified Insulglass LowE Plus® Clear insulated glazing. This provided not only the necessary insulation but also heightened the house’s aesthetic appeal by reflecting and inviting in the surrounding landscape.

In addition, integrating Insulglass LowE Plus® Clear insulated glazing significantly amplified the home’s efficiency. Its low-emissivity properties enhanced the home’s thermal performance, contributing to energy savings and comfort while promoting visual connections with the garden.

It’s a salient feature that bolsters the house’s capacity to harness natural light while also insulating the interiors from external temperatures. In essence, the glazed windows are a key component in achieving spaces that marry energy conservation with design integrity.

The final product—a tastefully renovated, weatherboard Victorian home—is the epitome of a successful architectural project, harmoniously reflecting the values and lifestyle of the family. As Gilbert articulates, “The most successful homes are a reflection of their owners, and this has truly been achieved in the ‘Harry House’.”
