Challenge
Situated in the heart of Camberwell, architects Elenberg Fraser designed Provenance to offer a fresh perspective on multi-residential living. The $30 million project comprises 12 home-sized apartments across a three-level building, each delivering the space and benefits of a spacious traditional home.
Melbourne’s ever-fluctuating climate necessitated exceptional solar control for its sometimes-scorching summers (low SHGC) and excellent insulation for its cold winters (low U-Value). The design brief was also clear: the interiors needed to be filled with natural light to enhance the open-plan living areas and create a seamless connection with Provenance’s leafy surrounds.
Solution
The introduction of Insulglass LowE Plus® insulated glazing with a grey tint and toughened inner glazing quickly resolved the challenges of climate, connection and optimal natural light.
Usually known for its clarity, maximizing solar heat gain and insulation without compromising on visible light, Insulglass LowE Plus® Grey was the modified solution for Provenance. Its characteristics, including highly energy efficient insulation and an added grey look to enhance solar control thanks to the grey tint, were pivotal in achieving the desired ambience for the residences. Not only did it ensure that apartments remained comfortable throughout the year.
Wenro Windows fabricated windows and doors for Provenance. Wenro project manager Ben Window says, “Insulglass LowE Plus® has completely transformed how we approach architectural challenges, especially in a project as sophisticated as Provenance.
“With high solar heat gain and insulation measures with the additional benefits of acoustic performance, safety and security, Insulglass LowE Plus® is a must-have for any residential venture challenged by climatic extremes.”
Moreover, the versatility of LowE Plus is evident in its application in Provenance with grey tinted glass on the external panes, reducing glare and improving solar control while enhancing exterior aesthetics.
Beyond the technological advancements, Provenance demonstrates Elenberg Fraser’s vision for community living. With only four residences per level, the design fosters interactions among neighbours, turning the building into a tight-knit community. Options for a home office or gym reflect the changing needs of urban dwellers, offering flexibility and personalisation.
Special features, like direct lifting systems connected to micro-lobbies in six apartments, elevate the sense of privacy and security, blurring the lines between freestanding homes and apartment living.
