Challenge

House 3, transformed from its modest 1950s blueprint into the most expansive structure on The Block, posed significant challenges regarding energy efficiency and interior climate regulation. With its larger footprint, there was a risk of compromised thermal performance, potentially leading to increased energy costs and reduced comfort for occupants.

Kristy and Brett’s vision for the house embodies designer living on an exceptional scale while incorporating modern, sustainable elements. The large window opening in the main bedroom, measuring 2.57 metres by 5.02 metres, further complicated matters by balancing heat control (loss and gain) with the desired visual appeal.

Solution

Weatherall Windows fabricated innovative solutions to these challenges using high-performance glazing and window systems. By employing Insulglass LowE Plus with u-values of 1.7 – 1.8 and SHGC between 0.24 – 0.43 in aluplast uPVC Ideal 4000 system joinery, they were able to create windows and doors that drastically improved the house’s insulation properties. This glazing and window technology not only minimises heat loss during colder months but also prevents excessive heat gain during warmer periods.

The versatile range of window and door systems – tilt-turn, fixed, smart-slide, French doors, and lift-slide door – allowed for tailor made solutions depending on a room’s requirements. For instance, the massive window in the main bedroom combined two tilt-turn windows for improved ventilation with four fixed panes, ensuring unhindered views and abundant natural light without compromising thermal performance.

Moreover, the uPVC joinery provided additional benefits beyond its insulation properties. As a material, uPVC is resistant to corrosion, which makes it durable in varying weather and harsh climate conditions. Furthermore, the combined glazing and window systems’ inherent soundproofing qualities added an extra layer of tranquility inside this luxurious home, offering respite from the outside world.

The successful integration of this advanced glazing throughout the house turned potential design challenges into standout features. Not only did it accentuate the home’s aesthetics, but it also reinforced its commitment to sustainability, keeping the interiors comfortable and the energy costs low. The harmonious synergy of style, sustainability, and high-spec innovations, as seen with the advanced glazing, encapsulated Kristy and Brett’s vision perfectly.

Glad to have been given the chance to work on the 2023 season of The Block, and be part of the team at House 3,” said Dave O’Connell, Managing Director at Weatherall Windows. “It was exceptionally rewarding for our team and certainly tested all of our skills.”

The choice of high-performance glazing in House 3 at 18 Charming Street showcased that luxury, scale, and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. The results spoke volumes, as the residence emerged as a testament to modern architectural excellence, effectively marrying visual luxury with energy efficiency.

At auction time, House 3 sold for $3.035M.
